There are different ways to build a better and more interesting future either for a city and for its citizens. Surely a quality Design School can offer enthusiasm, innovative solutions and it can participate actively to transform the overall feeling of living in a city. Eindhoven is definitely a small town compared to London or Tokyo, nevertheless they managed to create a world wide known Design School which attracts talents from all over the globe. The atmosphere inside the Academy is very engaging: you can’t recognize where classroom and studios spaces end and where the kitchen area for tea or lunch break begins, it’s a very fluid space where areas are mixed and lot of furniture are on wheels. It’s quite simple to guess that to design the future you have to be in a futuristic environment (at least it should pretend to be). It’s definitely more difficult to generate innovative thinking in an old classical environment where classrooms are conceived like old times.
Does it all depend on the visionary Director of the Eindhoven Design Academy Lidewij Edelkoort or on a clever investment from Philips?
Whatever the answer is, I think would-be designers should know that they don’t necessarily need to move to an expensive city like London or New York to get a good education on design.

The first few days the Art Biennale exhibition is open only to journalists, people not credited are not allowed to see the show. Artists stay around the exhibition only for the first 2-3 days (before the opening to the public anyway). Great performances happen only during this time, then videos and pictures will replace them just to tell visitors what they missed.
Maybe Gelatin didn’t really realize this but thanks to their amazing raft we became part of the Gelatin performance and enter to the main exhibition by water with no credit.

These days in Venice the air is amazing. It’s the week of the 52 Art Biennale. Wherever you go, you will definitely bump into some art event revealing places you never saw before or ending up having dinner with some crazy artists you never seen before.
Last night after watching a performance at the top floor of the Mondadori bookstore near San Marco square, I went with Zefrey and Drea (from Artradio P.S.1 MoMA) to dinner at the Nono Risorto and met Florian, one of the great Gelatin Artists. I told him that whenever I have guest in Venice one of the first thing I do is to show them the “Nella nutella” book made at the 2003 Art Biennale by Gelatin.
Florian and the Gelatin group will inaugurate their art-work tomorrow at the Bacini, near the Arsenale. Looking forward…

La luce a volte mi fa perder la testa. L’Australia ha intenzione di abolire la più bella simbiosi tra poesia e industria. Che futuro ci aspetta se ci resterà soltanto la brutta lampadina a risparmio energetico, che fa una luce del tutto indifferente e noiosa! Mi sembra accettabile solo nei faretti incassati. È vero, dobbiamo risparmiare energia, ma qualcuno ha pensato all’influenza che la luce ha su di noi, esseri umani, sulle nostre emozioni? Prevedo un grande boom per gli psicoterapeuti, in Australia. La luce significa anche speranza. Riuscite a immaginare di vivere sempre con questa luce disastrosa? No, non possiamo abbandonare la nostra cara lampadina! Non è solo il simbolo di un’idea geniale, a volte ci fa star bene, a volte ci ferisce. Abbiamo bisogno della lampadina! Ho molta fiducia nella creatività del genere umano e sono convinto che tra non molto avremo nuove tecnologie per la luce…

E’ a 2 minuti dalla LagoFabbrica l’albero di Natale più incredibile che mi è capitato di vedere in questo periodo.. innumerevoli palle monocromatiche tutte uguali ma tutte leggermente diverse, magicamente appese, addobbano un’esile struttura in legno.. cadranno da sole, le palle arancioni, qualche giorno dopo Natale togliendo il disturbo e decretando la fine delle festività. Ricompariranno l’anno prossimo, puntuali all’inizio dell’inverno, appendendosi autonomamente con una nuova disposizione e forse ancora più numerose per augurarci Buon Feste e lasciarci ancora una volta a bocca aperta..
